About the Author

TERRY LYNN THOMAS grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, which explains her love of foggy beaches and Gothic mysteries. When her husband promised to buy Terry a horse and the time to write if she moved to Mississippi with him, she jumped at the chance. Although she had written several novels and screenplays prior to 2006, after she relocated to the South she set out to write in earnest and has never looked back.

Terry Lynn writes the Sarah Bennett Mysteries, set on the California coast during the 1940s, which feature a misunderstood medium in love with a spy. The Drowned Woman is a recipient of the IndieBRAG Medallion. She also writes the Cat Carlisle Mysteries, set in Britain during World War II. The first book in this series, The Silent Woman, came out in April 2018 and has since become a USA TODAY bestseller. The Family Secret is slated for release in March 2019. Coffee and Ink’s Review

Cat Carlisle appears at first to be a woman resigned to and yet absorbed by her problems—infertility, her cheating husband, and avoiding her few good friends. She’s an outsider, though she’s proved herself to her husband’s family and friends, for all the good it does her now, as her husband’s sister, Isobel, has made her a particular target to reinforce her self importance.

It’s easy to see at the onset why this is such a popular suspense novel. It’s well written and moves at a fairly brisk pace; Cat is very likable, a cut above the people who try to keep her down, looked up to by the people who need her. The only dangers, it appears at first, are empty threats from Isobel and perhaps using the wrong fork at an important dinner.

Well, hold on there. It’s also pre-WWII Britain, Hitler and Germany beginning to beat the war drums. Cat’s husband has something to do with the Air Ministry and makes quite a bit of money whatever he’s doing. The novel really takes off when one spy notices another spy sitting outside of Cat’s house and involves Cat in finding out why. Really enjoyable domestic spy thriller, looking forward to the second book in the series. 😀

Shakespeare’s Witch is an un-put-down-able novel set in Elizabethan London centering on the actors in Will Shakespeare’s newest tragedy, Macbeth. Will has asked Sarah, half-sister of their costumer, Tom, to scry for him, as writing the play gives him nightmares and the future of it is uncertain. What Sarah also sees that night about herself and her brother is what she fights throughout the novel to keep from happening—death, horror, and dishonor. The rise and fall of the characters makes for a fascinating read into the superstitious, witch-hunting minds of the populace. Well researched and impeccably written, the immersion into this world and the story is well worth the bit of squeamishness caused by Sarah and Tom’s relationship. Dark, complicated and intense. I loved it!

This has got to be one of the most fantastic, well-written Romances I’ve read lately, a pure delight.   Romance isn’t high on my list these days, but I’ll definitely be reading more Alyssa Cole.

Portia Hobbs is pursuing an apprenticeship in swordmaking in Scotland that will round out her degrees in art history and multiple museum internships. She is also remaking herself, dropping bad habits like alcohol and men and negativity.

The level of detail is what drew me right into the story, the immediacy, the freshness. Portia is a hot mess on the inside, but as her online presence shows, she’s determined to be the heroine of her own story. Armed with her phone, intelligence, attitude and pepper spray, this should all work out for her, right?

As Kevyn the taxi driver said, “Aye, this is going to be grand.”

Very few books make me laugh out loud—this is one of them.

Destined to become a favorite Christmas re-read, perhaps….:D

A vivid retelling of the sinking of the Lusitania, riveting and well researched. The author pulled every thread making up the tragedy and wove a suspense-filled story that kept me on the edge of my seat. The characters and personality types of the early 20th century are true to history and as the Lusitania sailed toward tragedy, I couldn’t put it down.

Curtis Carlson is on the Lusitania in order to bring loan papers to the UK to help them in the war effort. The US has yet to enter the World War I theater, but the allies need their help. He meets the lovely Josette and her twin Yvette and their family moving to the UK, the charming Mrs. Donaldson and her dog Mr. Duns. There are spies aboard and munitions, but there are innocent civilians, and it’s heartbreaking to read how the Lusitania was carrying so many children with their families.

However dark the story is, how realistic, there are some rays of light at the end of the journey.

Colleen Adair Fliedner is a multi-published author, journalist, research historian, and travel writer.

 

She has had three nonfictions published, two of which were work-for-hire: A one-hundred-year coffee table book of Los Angeles history; Stories in Stone: stories of the pioneers who lived and died in Park City, Utah; and Quick Escapes from Orange County for Globe Pequot Press. Colleen’s background covers a wide range of writing experience, including an optioned screenplay; radio scripts and interviews; radio advertising scripts; magazine and newspaper articles; travel articles and Blogs for the Orange County Register newspaper; plays; a cable TV mini-series; several ghostwritten e-books, and over 100 travel articles.

C is for Civil War

A long while back, I was googling something or other when I came across this statistic: at least twelve women on both the Confederate and Union side fought in every major battle of the Civil War. In fact, it was very well known at the time, though history has obscured these brave women. I’ve read quite a lot about this now, as my WIP features one or two of these soldiers. The mind set to get me in my main character’s head, as she suffers from PTSD, boggles me but the more I read and write about her, the more I understand.

There was a couple who lived a few towns over, in Brownsfield. She followed him—not as his laundress or cook, but as a fellow soldier. They both survived and ended their days in Portland, Maine. Many women followed husbands and family members—those from agricultural and hunting families, some who followed their conscience or were looking for adventure…

C is also for Could you do it?

We don’t know exactly how many women were on the battlefields—there was a pushback of shame in some families whose great aunty went to the field, but again, it was a well known phenomenon, though their own letters and journals, unlike those of their fellow male soldiers, are sadly lacking. It makes sense if to keep their secret they needed to cut ties with family and friends, though another reason might be the low literacy rate among them.

5. All The Daring of the Soldier: Women of the Civil War Armies by Elizabeth Leonard

B is for Boboli

Boboli Gardens, Florence, Italy, 2008. A few of my favorite statuary. This pleasure garden lies at the heart of Florence, a green lung, as it were. Built by Cosimo I de’ Medici in the 16th century, it’s a huge pleasure garden. I remember being exhausted once we’d seen all we’d come to see. The statuary is charming and whimsical.

A is for Amphorae

I have always wanted to do this challenge and, for the 10th anniversary, I’m jumping in. Taking on a monthly theme looks intriguing, but I’m just going to have to wing it. You can write stories, post recipes, poetry, photography, but it’s got to correspond to a letter of the alphabet and cover every day of the month. The challenge is to blog every day.

Taken at Ostia Antica, May 2016, the intriguing remains of the port city of Ostia on the Tiber are remarkably preserved. Standing at the center of the labyrinthine remains of the homes and streets, it wasn’t hard to imagine the busy port, the rollicking taverns, the amphitheater filled to capacity, and raucous markets. These undecorated amphorae likely carried wine and olive oil on the trade ships.

These are in the British Museum–we were in London in 2010. Maybe my theme will be vacation photos, lol. Or History things. Or both, since that’s why we vacation.

In searching out a little more about amphorae, I found this very interesting article at the Ancient History Encyclopedia website. Based on the this, I’m going to guess the older amphora is the one in the first picture. Follow the link if you also want to know more 🙂
