About the Author

TERRY LYNN THOMAS grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, which explains her love of foggy beaches and Gothic mysteries. When her husband promised to buy Terry a horse and the time to write if she moved to Mississippi with him, she jumped at the chance. Although she had written several novels and screenplays prior to 2006, after she relocated to the South she set out to write in earnest and has never looked back.

Terry Lynn writes the Sarah Bennett Mysteries, set on the California coast during the 1940s, which feature a misunderstood medium in love with a spy. The Drowned Woman is a recipient of the IndieBRAG Medallion. She also writes the Cat Carlisle Mysteries, set in Britain during World War II. The first book in this series, The Silent Woman, came out in April 2018 and has since become a USA TODAY bestseller. The Family Secret is slated for release in March 2019. When she’s not writing, you can find Terry Lynn riding her horse, walking in the woods with her dogs, or visiting old cemeteries in search of story ideas.

Coffee and Ink’s Review

Cat Carlisle appears at first to be a woman resigned to and yet absorbed by her problems—infertility, her cheating husband, and avoiding her few good friends. She’s an outsider, though she’s proved herself to her husband’s family and friends, for all the good it does her now, as her husband’s sister, Isobel, has made her a particular target to reinforce her self importance.

It’s easy to see at the onset why this is such a popular suspense novel. It’s well written and moves at a fairly brisk pace; Cat is very likable, a cut above the people who try to keep her down, looked up to by the people who need her. The only dangers, it appears at first, are empty threats from Isobel and perhaps using the wrong fork at an important dinner.

Well, hold on there. It’s also pre-WWII Britain, Hitler and Germany beginning to beat the war drums. Cat’s husband has something to do with the Air Ministry and makes quite a bit of money whatever he’s doing. The novel really takes off when one spy notices another spy sitting outside of Cat’s house and involves Cat in finding out why. Really enjoyable domestic spy thriller, looking forward to the second book in the series. 😀

Burton Blake by Robert Tucker

Publication Date: January 6, 2019
Tell-Tale Publishing Group
eBook; 381 Pages
Genre: Historical Fiction/Mystery, Thriller & Suspense

In this sequel to The Revolutionist, the American journey of three generations locks the neophyte company president, Burton Blake, in a vicious struggle with corporate intrigue, financial greed, and social corruption.

Born to a taxi dancer at the beginning of the Second World War, Burton’s father, Elias Blake, never knows his natural father, who is killed in the South Pacific. He is raised by his mother and stepfather from her second marriage who makes his fortune during the post war real estate boom of the 50’s. Their untimely death by his business partner leaves the boy Elias in the guardianship of his mother’s best friend and her marine vet husband who introduces him to the macho culture of guns and hunting.

Elias’s youth is influenced by the adult world’s drive for personal material gain. Over the next decades, he expands his parents’ original real estate empire into the diversified multi-divisional, multi-national corporation that he leaves to his son, Burton.

Upon his forced return from traveling and working with oppressed third world people, Burton learns increasingly more about the true nature of his deceased father as he undertakes the challenges of leading the company in a new direction.

Love, Witchcraft, Sorcery, Madness.

Forbidden desires …
After her vision, Sarah fears for her life – she has never known the shewstone to lie, and she turns to her brother Tom for comfort. A strange darkness seems to haunt the playhouse, and when Tom sets out to seduce John Upton, the boy actor who plays Lady Macbeth, the boy sees the hand of witchcraft in his own forbidden desires for men. Then Sarah weaves a spell to win the love of the new lead actor, and John, terrified for the safety of his soul, begins to make his accusations.

The Spirits have spoken …
As rehearsals continue, Sarah and Tom must struggle to convince John he is mistaken and that his sins are his own – their lives and the fortune of the play are at stake. But the Spirits have spoken – will the fate that Sarah foresaw come to pass or is their destiny their own to decide?

Coffee and Ink’s Review

Shakespeare’s Witch is an un-put-down-able novel set in Elizabethan London centering on the actors in Will Shakespeare’s newest tragedy, Macbeth. Will has asked Sarah, half-sister of their costumer, Tom, to scry for him, as writing the play gives him nightmares and the future of it is uncertain. What Sarah also sees that night about herself and her brother is what she fights throughout the novel to keep from happening—death, horror, and dishonor. The rise and fall of the characters makes for a fascinating read into the superstitious, witch-hunting minds of the populace. Well researched and impeccably written, the immersion into this world and the story is well worth the bit of squeamishness caused by Sarah and Tom’s relationship. Dark, complicated and intense. I loved it!

Shakespeare’s Witch

A Duke by Default by Alyssa Cole

Coffee and Ink’s Review

This has got to be one of the most fantastic, well-written Romances I’ve read lately, a pure delight.   Romance isn’t high on my list these days, but I’ll definitely be reading more Alyssa Cole.

Portia Hobbs is pursuing an apprenticeship in swordmaking in Scotland that will round out her degrees in art history and multiple museum internships. She is also remaking herself, dropping bad habits like alcohol and men and negativity.

The level of detail is what drew me right into the story, the immediacy, the freshness. Portia is a hot mess on the inside, but as her online presence shows, she’s determined to be the heroine of her own story. Armed with her phone, intelligence, attitude and pepper spray, this should all work out for her, right?

As Kevyn the taxi driver said, “Aye, this is going to be grand.”

Very few books make me laugh out loud—this is one of them.

Destined to become a favorite Christmas re-read, perhaps….:D

GoodReads

Award-winning author Alyssa Cole’s Reluctant Royals series continues with a woman on a quest to be the heroine of her own story and the duke in shining armor she rescues along the way

New York City socialite and perpetual hot mess Portia Hobbs is tired of disappointing her family, friends, and—most importantly—herself. An apprenticeship with a struggling swordmaker in Scotland is a chance to use her expertise and discover what she’s capable of. Turns out she excels at aggravating her gruff silver fox boss…when she’s not having inappropriate fantasies about his sexy Scottish burr.

Tavish McKenzie doesn’t need a rich, spoiled American telling him how to run his armory…even if she is infuriatingly good at it. Tav tries to rebuff his apprentice, and his attraction to her, but when Portia accidentally discovers that he’s the secret son of a duke, rough-around-the-edges Tav becomes her newest makeover project.

Forging metal into weapons and armor is one thing, but when desire burns out of control and the media spotlight gets too hot to bear, can a commoner turned duke and his posh apprentice find lasting love?

Today is the publication day for Kris Waldherr’s THE LOST HISTORY OF DREAMS! In this captivating debut novel in the gothic tradition of Wuthering Heights and The Thirteenth Tale, a post-mortem photographer unearths dark secrets of the past that may hold the key to his future.

When famed Byronesque poet Hugh de Bonne is discovered dead in his bath one morning in 1850, the task of burying his body falls to his estranged cousin, historian turned postmortem photographer Robert Highstead. De Bonne’s will instructs that he should be buried in an unusual chapel, a stained glass folly set on the Shropshire moors, built to house the remains of his beloved wife and muse, Ada. It has since been locked to all outsiders—especially the rabid, cultlike fans of de Bonne’s final book, The Lost History of Dreams. Only Ada’s grief-stricken niece, Isabelle, holds the key—but she refuses to open the glass chapel unless Robert agrees to her bargain: Before he can lay Hugh to rest, Robert must record the real story behind her aunt’s ill-fated marriage over the course of five nights.

Sweeping and darkly atmospheric, THE LOST HISTORY OF DREAMS is a Gothic mystery about love and loss that blurs the line between past and present, truth and fiction, and ultimately, life and death. And remember, all love stories are ghost stories in disguise.

Hardcover & eBook; 320 Pages

Genre: Historical/Gothic/Mystery

A post-mortem photographer unearths dark secrets of the past that may hold the key to his future, in this captivating debut novel in the gothic tradition of Wuthering Heights and The Thirteenth Tale.

All love stories are ghost stories in disguise.

When famed Byronesque poet Hugh de Bonne is discovered dead of a heart attack in his bath one morning, his cousin Robert Highstead, a historian turned post-mortem photographer, is charged with a simple task: transport Hugh’s remains for burial in a chapel. This chapel, a stained glass folly set on the moors of Shropshire, was built by de Bonne sixteen years earlier to house the remains of his beloved wife and muse, Ada. Since then, the chapel has been locked and abandoned, a pilgrimage site for the rabid fans of de Bonne’s last book, The Lost History of Dreams.

However, Ada’s grief-stricken niece refuses to open the glass chapel for Robert unless he agrees to her bargain: before he can lay Hugh to rest, Robert must record Isabelle’s story of Ada and Hugh’s ill-fated marriage over the course of five nights.

As the mystery of Ada and Hugh’s relationship unfolds, so does the secret behind Robert’s own marriage—including that of his fragile wife, Sida, who has not been the same since the tragic accident three years ago, and the origins of his own morbid profession that has him seeing things he shouldn’t—things from beyond the grave.

Kris Waldherr effortlessly spins a sweeping and atmospheric gothic mystery about love and loss that blurs the line between the past and the present, truth and fiction, and ultimately, life and death.

Coffee and Ink’s Review

A vivid retelling of the sinking of the Lusitania, riveting and well researched. The author pulled every thread making up the tragedy and wove a suspense-filled story that kept me on the edge of my seat. The characters and personality types of the early 20th century are true to history and as the Lusitania sailed toward tragedy, I couldn’t put it down.

Curtis Carlson is on the Lusitania in order to bring loan papers to the UK to help them in the war effort. The US has yet to enter the World War I theater, but the allies need their help. He meets the lovely Josette and her twin Yvette and their family moving to the UK, the charming Mrs. Donaldson and her dog Mr. Duns. There are spies aboard and munitions, but there are innocent civilians, and it’s heartbreaking to read how the Lusitania was carrying so many children with their families.

However dark the story is, how realistic, there are some rays of light at the end of the journey.

IN THE SHADOW OF WAR: SPIES, LOVE & THE LUSITANIA
BY COLLEEN ADAIR FLIEDNER

Publication Date: November 15, 2018
Sand Hill Review Press
Hardcover, Paperback, & eBook; 356 Pages

Genre: Historical Fiction

In 1915 while the First World War raged on in Europe, Americans, and especially New Yorkers, faced their own “silent war” at home. Disgruntled with America’s so-called promise of “neutrality” and overt trade deals with England and France, the German government set up a spy ring headquartered in Manhattan. Their espionage and terrorist networks had tentacles reaching all the way to the German Ambassador in Washington D.C. German operatives planted explosives on American and British cargo ships en route from New York to England, France, and Russia. They plotted to blow up trains, bridges, factories, and even the U.S. Capitol Building.

Josette Rogers is the daughter of a rich businessman who must move his family to London when he inherits his uncle’s import/export business. Curtis Carlson is a rising star at the House of Morgan on Wall Street. They each have very different opinions about whether or not America should enter the war.

Curtis and Mr. Van Camp, a senior partner at Morgan’s Manhattan offices, are sent to England to have $500 million loan documents signed that will help finance the nearly bankrupt British and French governments. Josette and Curtis are both traveling to England on the RMS Lusitania when Josette suspects there is a spy ring on board. Were they sent to divulge the location of the Lusitania?

C is for Civil War

C

american-civil-war-316987_640

A long while back, I was googling something or other when I came across this statistic: at least twelve women on both the Confederate and Union side fought in every major battle of the Civil War. In fact, it was very well known at the time, though history has obscured these brave women. I’ve read quite a lot about this now, as my WIP features one or two of these soldiers. The mind set to get me in my main character’s head, as she suffers from PTSD, boggles me but the more I read and write about her, the more I understand.

There was a couple who lived a few towns over, in Brownsfield. She followed him—not as his laundress or cook, but as a fellow soldier. They both survived and ended their days in Portland, Maine. Many women followed husbands and family members—those from agricultural and hunting families, some who followed their conscience or were looking for adventure…

C is also for Could you do it?

We don’t know exactly how many women were on the battlefields—there was a pushback of shame in some families whose great aunty went to the field, but again, it was a well known phenomenon, though their own letters and journals, unlike those of their fellow male soldiers, are sadly lacking. It makes sense if to keep their secret they needed to cut ties with family and friends, though another reason might be the low literacy rate among them.

Here’s a list of some of the books I’ve been reading:

  1. An Uncommon Soldier: The Civil War Letters of Sarah Wakeman by Sarah Rosetta Wakeman
  2. Soldier, Nurse and Spy by Sarah Emma Edmunds

The first two were written by women who fought. Sarah Emma Edmunds donated everything she made from her book to the local veterans hospital.

  1. They Fought Like Demons: Women Soldiers of the Civil War by Blanton and Cook
  2. Cathy Williams: From Slave to Buffalo Soldier by Philip Thomas Tucker
  3. All The Daring of the Soldier: Women of the Civil War Armies by Elizabeth Leonard
  4. She Went to the Field: Women Soldiers of the Civil War by Bonnie Tsui

An excellent novel blending history and fact is this one by Erin Lindsay McCabe:

I shall be near to you

Boboli Gardens, Florence, Italy, 2008. A few of my favorite statuary. This pleasure garden lies at the heart of Florence, a green lung, as it were. Built by Cosimo I de’ Medici in the 16th century, it’s a huge pleasure garden. I remember being exhausted once we’d seen all we’d come to see. The statuary is charming and whimsical.

Series: The Rebels and Redcoats Saga, Book 3
Genre: Historical Fiction

Spy. Redcoat. Traitor.

After Captain John Carlisle’s dance with death, he’s retreated to the serenity of the Oneida village with his beloved Dellis McKesson, trying to hide from the inevitable truth: war is coming. But when duty calls, and John’s expertise is needed to negotiate a treaty between the Six Nations of the Iroquois and the Crown, he’ll once again be faced with a decision: his King or his conscience.

Many truths that have yet to be revealed, and a deal with the Devil made in desperation, threatens to ruin Dellis and John’s hard-won love. As ghosts of the past resurface, and bitter family rivalry exposes betrayal from those closest to her, Dellis is dragged down a devastating path to the truth of her parents’ murders.

Now, the die is cast as war comes to the Mohawk River Valley in the Summer of 1777. St. Leger and his native allies siege Fort Stanwix. They’re also plotting a secret attack that will force the Rebels and the Oneida to face off against the Crown and their allies, further dividing John’s loyalties, leaving him on the precipice of another decision: Rebel or Redcoat?

I have always wanted to do this challenge and, for the 10th anniversary, I’m jumping in. Taking on a monthly theme looks intriguing, but I’m just going to have to wing it. You can write stories, post recipes, poetry, photography, but it’s got to correspond to a letter of the alphabet and cover every day of the month. The challenge is to blog every day.

If you want to join in, it’s not too late, you have until April 6th to sign up here: www.a-to-zchallenge.com/2019/

Taken at Ostia Antica, May 2016, the intriguing remains of the port city of Ostia on the Tiber are remarkably preserved. Standing at the center of the labyrinthine remains of the homes and streets, it wasn’t hard to imagine the busy port, the rollicking taverns, the amphitheater filled to capacity, and raucous markets. These undecorated amphorae likely carried wine and olive oil on the trade ships.

*

These are in the British Museum–we were in London in 2010. Maybe my theme will be vacation photos, lol. Or History things. Or both, since that’s why we vacation.7-scan0007

In searching out a little more about amphorae, I found this very interesting article at the Ancient History Encyclopedia website. Based on the this, I’m going to guess the older amphora is the one in the first picture. Follow the link if you also want to know more 🙂
