No Woman’s Land
by Ellie Midwood

Publication Date: May 31, 2019
eBook; 368 Pages

Genre: Historical Fiction

“It was very dangerous for him, and he knew it. But his love for me was stronger than fear.” – Ilse Stein

This novel is based on the inspiring and moving love story of Ilse Stein, a German Jew, and Willy Schultz, a Luftwaffe Captain in the Minsk ghetto, who risked his life to save the one he loved the most.

When the last of the Jews’ rights are stripped in 1941, Ilse’s family is deported to a Minsk ghetto. Confined to a Sonderghetto and unable to speak the locals’ language, Ilse struggles to support the surviving members of her family. Befriended by a local underground member Rivka, Ilse partakes in small acts of resistance and sabotage to help her fellow Jews escape to the partisans.

A few months later, after losing almost his entire brigade of workers to one of the bloodiest massacres conducted by the SS, a local administrative officer Willy Schultz summons the survivors to form a new brigade. Ilse’s good looks immediately catch his eye, and he makes her a leader of the new unit and later, an office worker. Soon, an unlikely romance blossoms amid death and gore, moving a Nazi officer to go to great risks to protect not only Ilse but as many others as possible and allowing a Jewish girl to open her heart to the former enemy. Knowing that the ghetto would soon be liquidated, Willy Schultz swears to save Ilse, even if the cost would be his own life.

“We live together, or we die together,” – an ultimate oath of love in the most harrowing setting.

Dark, haunting, but full of hope, “No Woman’s Land” is a testament to the love that is stronger than fear and death itself.

Sign of the White Foal
by Chris Thorndycroft

Publication Date: July 1, 2019
eBook & Paperback; 327 Pages

Series: Arthur of the Cymry Trilogy (Book 1)
Genre: Historical Fiction

A generation after Hengest and Horsa carved out a kingdom in the east, a hero of the Britons rises in the west…

480 A.D. The sons of Cunedag have ruled Venedotia for fifty years but the chief of them – the Pendraig – is now dying. His sons Cadwallon and Owain must fight to retain their birthright from their envious cousins. As civil war consumes Venedotia, Arthur – a young warrior and bastard son of the Pendraig – is sent on a perilous quest that will determine the fate of the kingdom.

The Morgens; nine priestesses of the Mother Goddess have found the cauldron of rebirth – a symbol of otherworldly power – and have allied themselves with the enemy. Arthur and six companions are dispatched to the mysterious island of Ynys Mon to steal the cauldron and break the power of the Morgens. Along the way they run into the formidable Guenhuifar whose family have been stewards of Ynys Mon for generations. They need her help. The trouble is, Guenhuifar despises Arthur’s family and all they stand for…

Based on the earliest Arthurian legends, Sign of the White Foal is a rip-roaring adventure of Celtic myth and real history set in the ruins of post-Roman Britain.

Coffee and Ink’s review:

I don’t know which is more interesting—the stories of King Arthur and his court or how these stories came to be from the myths and ancient traditions of Albion. The Romans abandoned their forts to the people of the isle, but left behind their influence and culture— a potent blend from which to make something new. In this novel, the cauldron Arthur and his band hunt seems to represent the times—change is nothing to fear unless it heralds a return to a baser time or used for evil.

The author has cooked up his own potent brew in this gripping adventure story and retelling of the Arthurian myth. Between the two narratives and the details of daily life, the battles, the myths come to life, I found it very hard to put down. A fascinating time and a fascinating retelling, I highly recommend this book.

The Undertaker’s Assistant
by Amanda Skenandore

Publication Date: July 30, 2019
Kensington Publishing Corp.
eBook & Paperback; 304 Pages

Genre: Historical Fiction

Set during Reconstruction-era New Orleans, and with an extraordinary and unforgettable heroine at its heart, The Undertaker’s Assistant is a powerful story of human resilience–and of the unlikely bonds that hold fast even in our darkest moments.

“The dead can’t hurt you. Only the living can.” Effie Jones, a former slave who escaped to the Union side as a child, knows the truth of her words. Taken in by an army surgeon and his wife during the War, she learned to read and write, to tolerate the sight of blood and broken bodies–and to forget what is too painful to bear. Now a young freedwoman, she has returned south to New Orleans and earns her living as an embalmer, her steady hand and skillful incisions compensating for her white employer’s shortcomings.

Tall and serious, Effie keeps her distance from the other girls in her boarding house, holding tight to the satisfaction she finds in her work. But despite her reticence, two encounters–with a charismatic state legislator named Samson Greene, and a beautiful young Creole, Adeline–introduce her to new worlds of protests and activism, of soirees and social ambition. Effie decides to seek out the past she has blocked from her memory and try to trace her kin. As her hopes are tested by betrayal, and New Orleans grapples with violence and growing racial turmoil, Effie faces loss and heartache, but also a chance to finally find her place . . .

Praise for Amanda Skenandore and Between Earth and Sky

“Gripping and beautifully written, Between Earth and Sky tugs at the heart with its dynamic heroine and unique cast of characters. Though this novel brings alive two historical American eras and settings, the story is achingly modern, universal and important.” –Karen Harper, New York Times bestselling author of The It Girls

“Intensely emotional. . . . Skenandore’s deeply introspective and moving novel will appeal to readers of American history, particularly those interested in the dynamics behind the misguided efforts of white people to better the lives Native American by forcing them to adopt white cultural mores.” –Publishers Weekly

“A masterfully written novel about the heart-wrenching clash of two American cultures . . . a fresh and astonishing debut.” –V.S. Alexander, author of The Magdalen Girls and The Taster

“By describing its costs in human terms, the author shapes tension between whites and Native Americans into a touching story. The title of Skenandore’s debut could refer to reality and dreams, or to love and betrayal; all are present in this highly original novel.” –Booklist

“A heartbreaking story about the destructive legacy of the forced assimilation of Native American children. Historical fiction readers and book discussion groups will find much to ponder here.” –Library Journal

“At its heart, this luminous book tells a Romeo and Juliet story. But Skenandore’s book is so much more than a simple romance. This novel examines the complex relationship between love and loss, culture and conquest, annihilation and assimilation.” –Historical Novel Society

The power to evoke history thrives in the vivid writing of this novel, in the believable characters and setting of Reconstruction America. My heart broke for Effie on every page—her lost family, doomed love affair, her aloneness not only in post Civil War New Orleans, but amongst the city’s people of color. She’s tall, with big feet, and is hard pressed to keep herself decently dressed. Though broken families abide everywhere in the wake of Emancipation, Effie’s trade, what she had been raised to since she was a child (with echoes of Oliver Twist and his brief stint as a child mourner for hire) sets her apart. Effie’s trade unexpectedly brings her into dangerous situations.

The continuing of the violence perpetrated on former slaves by white people is everywhere, bringing the city together while tearing it apart, and forms a good part of the narrative. Betrayal is everywhere.

I did at first think this novel was a new historical mystery series, but my disappointment disappeared the more I turned the pages. This is a standout novel from my usual reading. I found the details of the embalmer’s trade fascinating. I love the heroine Effie and highly recommend this novel.

Apollo Grannus Books
eBook & Paperback; 340 Pages

Genre: Historical/Romance/Suspense

Lady Catherine, banished to the countryside as a useless girl with a lame leg, got her revenge by playing a dangerous game. And now it will ruin her.

When the old earl dies, his only child feels no sorrow. The earldom will now revert to the crown and Lady Catherine will continue to live life exactly as she pleases. But when she learns that she is the heir to a secret family title, everything changes. Marriage had once seemed unnecessary and out of the question; now it is the only thing she wants. The two men in her life both need her influence and wealth. Whom shall she choose? The kind but secretive Captain Avebury? Or the notorious Sir Lyle, the handsome smuggler? Both men deal very differently with honor. And when Catherine’s secret self-destructs, which man can be trusted to save her?

The Portrait is about a strong woman, foolish decisions, trust, and the definition of honor. Fans of Jane Austen’s independent women will recognize in Catherine a voice which will not be silenced.

Coffee and Ink’s Review

This well-written, darkly gritty historical (Georgian era) romance was a refreshing read. Everyone in disgrace, no one sure who is the enemy and who a friend, or lover. Secrets and distrust overflow the pages; I found the story compelling, hard to put down.

The former navel captain Avebury has more than one secret and resolving them means returning to the sea, where he belongs. When he meets Catherine, a strong but disabled heroine with secrets of her own, he might just have found his way to his true home–despite himself.

However, both of them have learned their bitter lessons—don’t trust anyone.

Very satisfying romance and mystery 🙂

The Earl in Black Armor

Publication Date: March 17, 2019
Ellys-Daughtrey Books
eBook, Paperback, Hardcover

Genre: Historical Fiction

Ireland, 1635.

When the clan leader sends Faolán Burke to Dublin to spy on Thomas Wentworth, the ruthless Lord Deputy of Ireland, the future of his centuries-old clan rests upon his shoulders. Wentworth is plotting to acquire clan lands of Connacht for an English Protestant plantation. To stop him, Faolán must discover misdeeds that could force King Charles to recall Wentworth to England.

Leaving his young daughter Elvy in the care of his best friend Aengus, Faolán works as a porter in Dublin Castle, and aligns with the alluring Denisa, Wentworth’s personal assistant. She, too, spies on Wentworth, but for very personal reasons.

While Faolán knows he should hate Wentworth, he admires his prosecution of pirates and corrupt nobles who prey on Irish merchants. Supremely arrogant and cruel to his enemies, Wentworth shows loyalty, warmth and compassion for family, friends and a few select others.

A common mission takes Faolán and Denisa from Dublin to London and Hampton Court; to York and Scotland; and to the highest levels of court intrigue and power. But secrets, fears, war and betrayal threaten their love—and even their lives. And as Wentworth’s power grows, so grow the deadly plans of his most treacherous and driven enemies.

“If you are looking for an adventure that will keep you on the edge of your seat, then look no further! Get ready for court intrigue, roguish behavior, and of course, that little bit of romance… Well, then you have a book that is hard to put down.” — Rebecca Hill, Net Galley Reviewer

Publication Date: February 12, 2019
Atria Books
Hardcover, Paperback, Audiobook, eBook

Genre: Historical Fiction

A captivating novel of Renaissance Italy detailing the mysterious life of Bartolomeo Scappi, the legendary chef to several popes and author of one of the bestselling cookbooks of all time, and the nephew who sets out to discover his late uncle’s secrets—including the identity of the noblewoman Bartolomeo loved until he died.

When Bartolomeo Scappi dies in 1577, he leaves his vast estate—properties, money, and his position—to his nephew and apprentice Giovanni. He also gives Giovanni the keys to two strongboxes and strict instructions to burn their contents. Despite Scappi’s dire warning that the information concealed in those boxes could put Giovanni’s life and others at risk, Giovanni is compelled to learn his uncle’s secrets. He undertakes the arduous task of decoding Scappi’s journals and uncovers a history of deception, betrayal, and murder—all to protect an illicit love affair.

As Giovanni pieces together the details of Scappi’s past, he must contend with two rivals who have joined forces—his brother Cesare and Scappi’s former protégé, Domenico Romoli, who will do anything to get his hands on the late chef’s recipes.

With luscious prose that captures the full scale of the sumptuous feasts for which Scappi was known, The Chef’s Secret serves up power, intrigue, and passion, bringing Renaissance Italy to life in a delectable fashion.

Well written and perfectly paced, The Chef’s Secret is a fascinating immersion into sixteenth-century Italian life, an introduction to the world’s first celebrity chef, and a reminder of the power of food to influence a civilization.” (Booklist)

“King twists in romance, mystery, cultural richness, and some zesty research. Scappi’s secrets are unveiled at a pace that simmers with intrigue…Mixed together with decadent banquets and sweeping historical detail, King has a recipe that entices the senses… vibrant in both visual and flavorful detail.” (Historical Novel Review)

Coffee and Ink’s Review

The Chef’s Secret made me yearn for Renaissance Florence, the flavors, sights and scents. If I had a time machine, this would be my first, and possibly only, stop. Alas, I must make due with fiction, for now 😉

This page-turner of a novel, drenched in color and character, narrates on two timelines. One is the journals of the recently deceased uncle of Giovanni Scappi, who has inherited his recipes, fabulous kitchen knife, and the job of chief chef of the Vatican. And his uncle’s secrets. Giovanni is laboriously decoding the journals but the secrets within are quickly catch up to him…

Sumptuous and sexy, lushly detailed, I loved this novel filled with the romance and intrigue echoing the Borgias and Medici in their heyday.

Rogue Most Wanted
by Janna MacGregor

Publication Date: June 25, 2019
St. Martin’s Press
eBook & Paperback; 384 Pages

Series: The Cavensham Heiresses, Book #5
Genre: Historical Romance

Wanted: an engagement of convenience. Found: A noble suitor.

Raised on a remote Scottish estate by her adoring grandfather, Lady Theodora Worth has inherited an earldom as well as the land itself. But when an upstart duke challenges her claim to the title and the Ladykyrk estate, Thea is suddenly in need of a husband—in name, at least. An elderly neighbor with a thoroughly modern sensibility and a dashing great-nephew just might be the answer to Thea’s prayers. Except she has no intention of marrying the first man she meets. That would be utterly ridiculous.

It just can’t be him. . .

Lord William Cavensham is entirely too devoted to his family’s estate—ever since he was jilted as a lad–to wed, but he agrees to meet the woman his aunt has taken under her wing—and introduce her to possible suitors. But after just one meeting with beautiful, spirited Thea, Will is determined to help her reclaim her title. And even moreso, he can’t stop thinking that perhaps marriage to this bold, passionate woman may be the one thing he’s been missing all along?

Coffee and Ink’s Review

While I’m more drawn to Regency Mystery than Regency Romance, this novel is based on a complicated maze of inheritance laws and the dire lengths some would go to take or to keep their estates. I find this fascinating. In the notes at the end of the book, the author writes about the true story that inspired Rogue, though the real life Thea was nothing like the woman in the story.

Our Thea, raised on a remote Scottish estate, does not have much in the way of culture or education, but she knows her own history down to every tree and tenant. Her roots are deep here. When her beloved grandfather, her only family, dies, a duke challenges her claim to her title and the estate. She needs a husband to keep Ladykyrk and protect all who will be left vulnerable to the new duke’s plans.

When Thea seeks the advice of her neighbor, Lady Stella Payne, she finds much more than advice. Stella becomes her advocate in all things, and has just the husband for her, her nephew, Lord Will Cavensham.

Will, however, has avoided love and marriage since he was jilted as a young man. He pours his heart and soul into the family estates and wants nothing to do with Thea’s problems, never mind marry her. But he does agree to help her, his whole family does, and as they seek to transform her Pygmalion-like into a woman society will accept, he starts to fall for her. Weirdly, he falls so hard, he only wants the best for her, and doubts that he himself is that. This tension keeps the story humming as the complications over her inheritance and her feelings for Will build higher and higher. Very well written with humor and compassion, the author never makes it easy on her characters. A satisfying read for this sometime romance reader.

The Impaler’s Wife
by Autumn Bardot

Publication Date: April 2, 2019
Flores Publishing
eBook; 452 Pages

Genre: Historical Fiction/Romance

Legend, history, and passion collide in this gritty, evocative, and sensual story about history’s most notorious price and the woman who paid love’s ultimate price.

The year is 1464, and young King Matthias controls Hungary, his family, and the fate of the world’s most notorious political prisoner, Prince Vlad Dracula.

Ilona Szilágy, the king’s cousin, is young and ambitious. Dracula is determined to marry into the Hunyadi family. It is love at first sight…but the king has other plans. The Impaler Prince, however, never takes no for an answer.

This begins Ilona’s journey into the treacherous world of court intrigues, family betrayals, and her husband’s dark desires. Eager to become Vlad’s trusted confidant, Ilona soon discovers that marriage to a man tortured by his past comes with a price.

Woven throughout is a peek into the life and times of one of the world’s most enigmatic and maligned rulers…the man before the legend.

With Bardot’s decadent period detail and a cast of gritty evocative characters, The Impaler’s Wife offers a fierce yet sensuous glimpse into the violent 15th century.

Coffee and Ink’s Review

I shouldn’t have fallen in love with this book but I did. The main characters shouldn’t have had my sympathy but they did. The magic of storytelling, extensive research, and the power of love all mixed together to make this a potent, delicious, and harrowing read.

The narrative revolves on a double timeline and narrative—Vlad’s early years and his wife’s Ilona’s story set in the bloody 15th century in Hungary. Amid court intrigues and family betrayals, both struggle to free their country of the Turks on the last frontier of Christendom.

For all the fascinating research and darkly compelling narrative, the writing lifts this story of danger and erotic love into the heady and inspired atmosphere (yes, excellent prose makes me giddy) as Ilona proves again and again to be Vlad’s match in intellect and appetite. I couldn’t put it down and highly recommend this novel and this author.
